about

Tired Veins is the second album by Heavy For The Vintage, the mostly-solo project of Michael Wood, who also plays in M is We.

A co-worker and friend of Woods, Nikolas Carlton, is a beautifully spoken poet, and when Wood discovered this, he had the idea of collaborating. So one day over drinks and food, Wood recorded some of Carlton's arrangements. He then used these as stepping stones to many of the new songs that would make up Tired Veins. The sprinkling of poetry over music idea would quickly shape the direction of the album, also using a Charles Bukowski poem for one, and various other voice samples for others.

For Tired Veins, a combination of tape loops, samples, xylophone and omnichord with traditional drums, bass, synth, and guitar were used to put this together. This is the first HFTV recording that is made with a heavy use of cassette looping, adding an analog and nostalgic feeling that marks a new direction for HFTV.

Fans of Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, David Lynch, John Carpenter, Amulets, and Hainbach should be happy with this album.

During the making of this album, Wood discovered he had cancer. Most of this album would end up being finished while undergoing grueling treatment. It must have come out in the music, because Wood asked a friend, Kait Brugger, to make a piece of art influenced by listening to the album. What Brugger came up with seemed to embody what Wood was going through, and the name is a reference to the feeling Wood felt, as the number of times his lab work increased.
